Make the most out of your DS aka "Zz85 Guide to NDS Homebrew Apps"
How to use this guide
Basically look at the table of contents, and see what interests you. Eg. would you like to listen to mp3s on your DS? Check out the section. This guide might assume you have basically knowledge of running homebrew- transfering to your storage card or patching with DLDI. Here might just teach you new ways to do stuff. This is not yet completed, but you can help too by editing this page or giving me comments.
Versions
14 June 2007 - 0.1 Initial Document. Announce this project before going to bed for comments.
15 June 2007 - Additonal of apps, and software links
Todo
Update links to the application titles.
Coverage of more feature that NDS can do.
Touch up and clean up
Filter and select quality apps for the many software which does the same features. Recommend app by placing * by side the title.
Multi-purpose File Browser/Manager on the DS
See DSOrganize and Moonshell
Playback Music (Eg. MP3,OGG..)
You can use: Moonshell Player, DSOrganize, LMP-NG,
My prefered player for music listening is Moonshell followed by DSOrganise.
LMP-NG has is an Ipod-liked interface or what they call IPod clone. Its a impressive and nice to show off but I get cracks in mp3 playback.
DSOrganize plays FLAC, M4A/M4B, AAC, WAV, and modules like MOD, XM, IT, S3M, SPC, NSF, SID
Moonshell plays MID files in addition to these.
Read text files aka "E-Books"
Turning your DS into a digital book or paper.
Moonshell- my preferred. Supports different encodings and fonts. Open huge files too. Can be configure to use top (normal), bottom (touch) or both screens. There's a collection of free books optimised for moonshell at the Moon Books Project
DSOrganize- useful if you need to edit the files. I usually use it to open smaller txt files.
ReadMore Alpha- Interesting and prefered to some. Turns the DS sideway to make it look like a real book with 2 pages.
NDSkybookM - A little like ReadMore except its uses the tranditional chinese/japanese book style, the flow of characters starts from top right, and reads vertically down followed by left.
Dolphin Reader- A chinese text reader which reading style is similar to ReadMore.
DS Reader
Read E-Book while Listening to Music
So far this Chinese modified Windows XP-like Moonshell player does it. Start the play and then select a text file to read it while the music plays in the background. Use R+L to close the book.
Another to do this is using DSLinux. Use a terminal to run "madplay * --downsample" on a directory of music files. Hit Alt-F2 to switch terminals and run vi to open a text files. You might want to use consolechars to change the font size.
View Photos, Images, Comics
The 2 general purpose software MoonShell, DSOganize does them again.
For specialised software try Comic Book DS, and Infantile Paralysiser's Image Viewer . Both allows album, gallery style viewing. ComicBookDS has an excellent interface (perhaps the best I seen for DS) but would require a java application to convert files into a comic format running on the DS. ImgView also needs to convert using its windows software.
Surf/Browse the Net
So far the best / most compatible web browser is the commerical Nintendo Opera Browser.
Next is ported web browsers on DSLinux (needs a little experience):
retawqs is a quick text based browser, but you might need to learn a few key commands.
links has quite good text layout compatibility, and in the recent build you can surf graphically running "links -g"
The browser included is also text-based but runs pretty smooth. DSO Browser
Other developing proejct I'm eying without any working release yet are Okiwi, Bunjalloo, DSHobro
Store and Watch Videos on the DS
Moonshell, DSMPlay
Moonshell playbacks DPG/DPG2 Video format, which is a MPEG-1 video and MP2 or OGG audio recording. Conversion on windows is usually done using dpgenc.exe from dpgtools, but BatchDPG can be used.
DSMPlay has a windows media player skin/interface, with DVD like chapter feature. The conversion for DSM player is usually nicer, but the video files are very huge - few hundred MB for few minutes of playback.
Check your mail
NDSMail
You could also check your web mail if you already using your DS to surf the net.
Transfer files to and from DS wirelessly
Setup a FTP or TFTP Server, or FTP client
DSFtp, CFtpServer, DsLiveFtp, TFtpsDS
WifiTransfer
DsFtp seems to be the most matured FTP server for the NDS. However, it is single threaded so make sure the FTP client doesn't run concurrent connections.
CFtp is the file name of the ftp server downloaded from its french thread titled "Serveur FTP NDS". Its seems that 0.3 Alpha comes with a FTP Client. http://blog.dev-scene.com/lilou/
TFtpDS is uses the TFTP protocol (which is a common transfer protocol for routers), and the command line is usually used to send and receive files. This is only for Flash Advance Pro carts.
Note: DSOrganise has the ability to download applications using its online homebrew database.
*WifiME
Remote control of your PC
Ds2Win, DSPad(Ds2Key), DsVNC, Pointyremote, VNC in DSLinux
DSMouse, Mk5
Connect remotely via SSH
I wished someone had written a app for SSH, just like one for PSP, but anyway you could still use SSH running DSLinux.
Just type "ssh hostname -u username". The features after this are limitless. You could run screen to multiplex terminals, run console based web browser(links), editor(nano), msn (tmsnc), torrents (ctorrent) and much more..
Write Notes
Todo notes: DSO, DSsuite
Txt writers: TxtWriter
DSNotes http://www.musicpd.org/info.shtml
Chat on Messenger(MSN, AOL..)
Msn:
BeUp Looks almost like MSN Live. Supports avatars. Handwritting doesn't seems to be working. Also accounts with huge number of contacts may not be able to connect (likely due to a dswifilib issue)

DOS: I would think that with DS hardware its possible but so far I've seen no new on anyone doing this.
Someone is creating a Win3.1 like software but I guess that falls under Organisers. Also there are skins for moonshell which makes it look like Mac or windows OS.
